You were so much more agreeable back in the old days:

The Battlefield series is always good for some fun. Nothing beats a good romp on Midway as a medic. As for the game itself, it's fast, but not too fast. It looks good, but the system requirements are reasonable. It's moddable, and the mods are fun. It's intense, but not by too much.

Project Reality, on the other hand, turns the intensity up to 11. I'm sure you've tried it, it's a total blast. As much as I love BF2, I've had more memorable moments in PR.

I'm also glad they added widescreen support to the latest beta of the 1.5 patch. No more stretching! No CD check! Improved Vista support! In short, awesome.

Having said that I'd still recommend BF2 if you're looking to get into the series, just don't be too discouraged by the hardcore that still play.
I know what you mean with the BF2/TF2 feeling. I think what decided it for me was when I got knife-killed in BF2142, from the front, while unloading into the guy with an assault rifle. Source engine physics would never have allowed the guy to come so close while being hit and a one-shot knife kill in a game where I'm FULLY ARMOURED (ie my head is fully enclosed)is pure BS.

I loved 2142, playing as an engineer- it feels like I've got a viable solution to almost any problem. Sure, I've only got an smg for infantry vs infantry encounters, but I can usually manage to outwit and outflank enemies when I'm not making a run for a handy turret or vehicle instead. Game options like drop pods really help keep the action fast-paced and interesting.

Man, BF2. I remember those days...

I liked in in its prime, but going back now it doesn't feel quite as satisfying as it used to. TF2 probably spoiled me on this.

One thing that bugs me is that it never feels like I kill anyone. The death animation doesn't feel right.

Heh, thanks for pulling that up again.
I was in the top 100 snipers for the first year of BF2, right up at 98 and 101 for a few months before I just stopped playing because I could still hear the sound effects when I tried to sleep. Was a great game and is probably still pretty awesome to play, but I think, probably dated and full of arseholes??

I'd go with the original Battlefield 1942 with the Desert Combat mod for an introduction. Obviously you get two games for the price of one - the slow, droppy, iron bomby WWII-flavoured original that's pretty playable against bots or with small numbers, and the faster, longer-range Desert Combat covering the modern angle. BF2 was developed in part by Kaos, the guys behind Desert Combat, and makes relatively few improvements over it at the cost of lots of bugs and restrictions - most notably the weapon unlocking bullshit and crippled co-op that have marked BF2 and 2142. And DC has ridiculous choppers that I love to fly; minigun Littlebird taxi <3, and a chopper botstomp on Kharkov or Battleaxe is nearly a complete videogame in its own right.

Co-op Berlin Desert Combat with the bots turned up to 10-1 is essentially Left 4 Dead but years earlier. 'Oh shi-' 'Over th-' 'BRDM six o'clock!' 'Down down!' 'Hummvee inbound five seconds stay there guys.' 'Get behind it!' 'I've got ammo, I'll spray, run for the point! GogogodiveYes! Stay down!' 'I'll block them off around the corner!' 'Grenades, guys, spam grenades!' 'Capture in 4...3...' 'Nine o'clock swarm!' '1...CAPTURED! Hold it!' 'Spawning there in three.' 'Gonna spawn west and cover the long street.' 'Leaving south alley, gonna grenade.' 'Let's leave east and flank, guys.' 'Right!'

Other introductions to Battlefield include Battlefield 1943, which is coming out with a couple of the most popular maps from 1942 in a modern engine and rejiggered classes, and Frontlines Fuel of War from Kaos. I haven't had a chance to touch my copy yet, but I hear the pitfalls are a bit of a reliance on drone tricks and RPG progression. OTOH, I hear it has a level where you're under time pressure to fight your way behind terrain that will shelter you from nuclear explosions that blast over the battlefield from various directions.

It's a shame that BF1942 Forgotten Heroes never grabbed the mainstream and completely breaks the bots, since some of their maps are just insane. There's one I played where teams of snipers overlooking a river cover the laborious, swimming, trench-warfare style advance of their assault teammates from tiny log-strewn island to tiny log-strewn island. The whole time I was in it, crawling around behind logs and hillocks, all I could think of was that quote from All Quiet on the Western Front where our veteran laments the stupidity of new recruits who can't spot cover until it's a full eighteen inches deep. I saw another one, completely naval, where ship-launched scout biplanes duel with each other and AA to spot the enemy fleet so their big guns back home can dial in. Mad.

It’s a shame that BF1942 Forgotten Heroes never grabbed the mainstream and completely breaks the bots, since some of their maps are just insane. There’s one I played where teams of snipers overlooking a river cover the laborious, swimming, trench-warfare style advance of their assault teammates from tiny log-strewn island to tiny log-strewn island. The whole time I was in it, crawling around behind logs and hillocks, all I could think of was that quote from All Quiet on the Western Front where our veteran laments the stupidity of new recruits who can’t spot cover until it’s a full eighteen inches deep. I saw another one, completely naval, where ship-launched scout biplanes duel with each other and AA to spot the enemy fleet so their big guns back home can dial in. Mad.

Unfortunately I missed out on Battlefield. For a long time I didn't do online shooters because of the often hostile communities that can populate this sort of game. Nowadays I'm better at games, and better at finding more pleasant communities to play with.

I'd love to have a go at Battlefield, might be worth waiting for the almost-certain-to-be-announced Battlefield 3, but until then which is the best one to start with?

I've never really played bf2, i played for like 10 minutes round a freinds but that wasnt enough to really give me a good idea about it. I have played bf2124 alot more though. still not enough to really be certain of it though, because i had so many problems with connection and my characters score was all screwed up, meaning i couldnt get any upgrades. however, from what i have played, i do think it's alright, but probably is hard to find a REALLY good game, as it's so dependant on teamwork.

I remember being Medic, the fun-est class by miles. I used to Top the Score boards within minutes, and in the beginning, the medic's rifle was the best there was. I was unstoppable.

I went back last year, realised how unpleasant getting into the game was and I'm fairly sure that they nerfed the rifle.

Still, my copy of PCG finally arrived, hurrah.
