I agree that while there might be a smidgen of corruption somewhere, or at least I would like to think I'm not naive enough to pretend it never has or will never happen (a human nature thing) I don't think for a second it's as widespread as a lot of people may think it is, or indeed even barely prevalient at all in the 'big' outlets. I do however, get exremely annoyed at the vocal minority who seem to think that every action has some sort of commerical bias behind it. As much as they accuse journlists of jumping though hoops to please commericalism, surely they themselves are doing the same thing by jumping through the hoops of the anti-commercial bridgade. And it infuriates me to some degree, moreso in cases like this one, where no hard evidenece has even come to light. It's the sort of thing that sadly makes me think the worst of people sometimes, that they can't see an action without thinking the worst ogf motives behind it.

Am I sad and sorry for looking at a review score, knowing the publishers have had massive a presence, knowing that there's a conflict of interests, admittedly not knowing very much about the industry from the inside, and thinking "wtf, this is bullshit!"? Maybe I am. Maybe I shouldn't have spent so much money on X-Files DVD boxsets this year.

Still, there are pseudonyms like the Ram Raider, and various other unreliable sources, that feed on our imagination. Human beings aren't perfect and if publication staff are given free flights, hotels, fed and entertained on the publisher's wallet, giving their game a completely unbiased review is a lot to ask of every single games journalist in the industry.

I highly doubt that even people as paranoid as myself question games journalism in its entirity. There has to be some Evil Corrupt Bad Guys in there somewhere! The truth is out there. Or maybe it isn't.

Penny Arcade have been accused of corruption before, when favourable comics and posts go up alongside advertising for the same game. They deny it and explain that they only accept advertising for games they like.

Penny Arcade isn't some faceless media company, either. It's two affable guys who are patrons of a million dollar charity for sick kids. People still accuse them of corruption.

You'd think they'd know better than to readily assume other people are guilty.
